Lifestyle News: Pure water does not naturally spoil as it contains no sugar, salt, or bacteria. The problem arises when it is stored in dirty containers or comes into contact with dust and impurities. If kept in clean vessels, it can remain safe for months. But once the container is contaminated, bacteria begin to multiply, making the water unsafe.
Bottled water in markets usually carries an expiry date. In reality, this date refers more to the bottle’s plastic than the water itself. Over time, chemicals from plastic can seep into the water, especially if bottles are exposed to sunlight or heat. This changes the taste and quality, raising health concerns.
For storing water at home, use stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastic bottles. Keep them in cool, dark places away from direct sunlight. Such stored water can remain safe for six months to one year if containers are cleaned regularly. Without proper cleaning, harmful bacteria can begin to grow quickly.
Open water gets contaminated faster. Air, dust, and microorganisms can enter easily, reducing its safety. That is why water from opened bottles should be consumed within 2–3 days. Beyond that, taste and odor changes indicate bacterial growth. Drinking such water can pose serious health risks.
Tap water often contains chlorine or other impurities. To make it safer for longer storage, it should be boiled or filtered before storing. When stored properly, it can be safe for about six months. However, if there is a change in smell, color, or particles appear, the water must be discarded immediately.
During emergencies or natural disasters, stored water is crucial. Such water should be replaced every six months to maintain freshness. Adding a few drops of chlorine can make it last longer, though the taste may change. In emergencies, safety matters more than taste, so disinfected water is a better choice.
Always store water in clean, disinfected containers. Keep it away from sunlight and heat. Regularly check stored water for smell, taste, and clarity. If anything seems unusual, replace it immediately. Label containers with storage dates to track usage. These small steps ensure safe and healthy drinking water for longer periods.
